From guardianangels.org:
Curtis is known as one of the most effective and respected grass roots leaders of the past quarter century. He has been a community activist since his early teens, from the life-saving rescue of six neighbors from a burning building, to creating one of the nation's first recycling centers (in his parent's basement), and donating the proceeds to a neighborhood children's group. Curtis Sliwa has always been about helping his fellow man. He has always remained true to his beliefs, living them in every endeavor. From his Bronx patrols of the Muggers Express Subway to the familiar voice of common sense and law and order on WABC radio, Curtis's vision and compelling drive has had an impact on the lives of millions of urban dwellers, suburban neighborhoods and Internet surfers, worldwide.
Curtis has been recognized by Presidents Nixon, Reagan and Clinton, applauded repeatedly by former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, and honored by business, entertainment and civic leaders across the Nation. This charismatic leader has brought together people from all walks of life with his concern for the basics of life, safety, self-esteem, pride and responsibility. However, disparate their politics, all have agreed that Curtis has been a singular voice of civic contribution, and a modern day example of volunteerism that has rarely been matched.
