C-SPAN & Time Warner Cable Present Students & Leaders: New York City
National Figures Visit Select New York City High Schools to Highlight Leadership and Public Service
NEW YORK, NY, May 17, 2004 -- C-SPAN and Time Warner Cable created a unique educational experience for select New York City high school students through an initiative called
Students & Leaders: New York City. The project brings national leaders to the classrooms of ten local high schools. Each visit will air nationally on C-SPAN and C-SPAN2. Schools participating in this week-long project were selected by the Department of Education.
During the week of May 17th, leaders from a variety of fields have been invited by C-SPAN to "return to the classroom" at schools in Time Warner Cable's service area to discuss their lives and careers and the concepts of leadership and public service. C-SPAN cameras will record the events so these can be aired on the C-SPAN networks and shared with other students across the country and with C-SPAN's national viewing audience. The video will also be archived and available on the project's website, studentsandleaders.org, along with lesson plans and other teaching materials.
"Time Warner Cable is proud to partner with C-SPAN to showcase prominent leaders in local classrooms and provide these students with the opportunity to personally interact with national figures," said Harriet Novet, Vice President, Time Warner Cable of New York and New Jersey. "Students learn firsthand their inspirational stories of success and hear the driving forces that shaped their careers," added Novet.
Joanne Wheeler, C-SPAN's Director of Community Relations & Education, described the project as "an excellent opportunity for students in New York City to interact with people like author Frank McCourt, journalists Anderson Cooper and Lori Stokes, as well as community leaders such as the Guardian Angels' Curtis Sliwa, Rep. Vito Fossella (R-NY) and many others." Of the Time Warner Cable partnership, Wheeler added, "Each company has a good track record in education. Teaming for this project allows us both to play to our strengths to the benefit of local schools."
The two daily events will air the next day on C-SPAN2 at 6am or 6pm ET and on C-SPAN the following week at either 6pm or 7pm ET. Please see the enclosed schedule of leaders and air dates for each visit. About Time Warner Cable
