From the California State Assembly Republican Caucus:
Kevin McCarthy was elected to represent the 32nd Assembly District in 2002. Described by George Skelton of the Los Angeles Times as someone who “could be unlucky for Democrats,” McCarthy was selected unanimously by his Republican colleagues to serve as the Assembly Republican Leader. With a strong vision for reform, McCarthy took on the position of Leader in January 2004. He is the first representative from Kern County and first freshman member to assume the post.

As the Assembly Republican Leader, McCarthy is a member of California’s “Big 5,” which includes Governor Schwarzenegger, the President Pro Tem of the Senate, Republican Senate Leader, and Speaker of the Assembly. During “Big 5” meetings, the legislative leaders negotiate solutions to critical issues such as California’s budget crisis and workers’ compensation. McCarthy also served on Governor Schwarzenegger’s transition team and provided valuable insight regarding the state’s legislative process.

McCarthy is a fourth-generation Kern County resident. His great-grandfather, Jeremiah McCarthy, became a Kern County cattle rancher in 1883.

In addition to understanding the issues that face Kern County residents, McCarthy understands California’s job climate and the difficulty in navigating the bureaucratic process. He created his first business before age 21 (Kevin O’s Deli) and later sold it to help fund his college education. He knows first-hand the difficulties that small-business owners face every day.
