Purpose:
This activity will help you understand the ways that leadership is important in journalism.
Background: From print, to radio and television, to the Internet, members of the media have taken advantage of evolving technologies to get and tell stories to the American public. While the first amendment established freedom of the press, it did not dictate the roles that journalists, editors and publishers would play in our
society. Over time the priorities of journalists have shifted among their various tasks of investigating,
sensationalizing, editorializing, and informing. With this video segment from Students & Leaders, meet a journalist and
explore his leadership role in American society.
Discussion
Questions: As you watch the video clips use these
discussion questions to examine the leadership roles of writers, journalists and editors.
Chris
Meyer, Orange County Register Deputy
Editor [WatchClip]
Chris Meyer believes
that leadership can be seen in every strata of society.
People make choices about leadership everyday. As the
Deputy Editor of the Orange County Register, Chris Meyer believes that as a leader, he
works to collaborate with his staff.
He also believes that a
good leader will treat all people equally. Mr. Meyer tells students
to find a career that they find fun; life
is too short to spend time doing something that
you don't truly enjoy. |
