J.D. Hayworth represents Arizona's 5th Congressional District, which includes Scottsdale, Tempe, Fountain Hills, Ahwatukee, Rio Verde, and parts of Mesa, Phoenix and Chandler. He is serving his fifth two-year term in the U.S. House of Representatives.
J.D. is a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, the only Representative from Arizona ever appointed to this key panel, which is responsible for all tax-related legislation, as well as issues involving trade, Social Security and Medicare. In this post, he has steadfastly supported the causes of limited government and lower taxes. In 2001, he was a major supporter and helped pass the across-the-board tax cuts proposed by President Bush. In 2002, he was named to the Speaker’s Task Force, which spearheaded the successful drive to pass legislation in the House that added a prescription medicine benefit for seniors on Medicare.
Congressman Hayworth is an Assistant Whip in the House leadership organization and is chairman of the House Conservative Opportunity Society. He founded and chairs the Constitutional Caucus and sponsored the "Congressional Responsibility Act," which improves accountability in the legislative process. In his first term, National Review magazine listed J.D. as one of the top ten conservative newcomers to Congress.
Prior to his election to Congress, J.D. was a public relations consultant, an insurance agent, and a radio news commentator. His media career included both radio and television, most notably seven years as a sports anchor on channel 10 in Phoenix. He is a member of the North Ridge Community Church; a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International; a volunteer reader for various community groups, and is a speaker for D.A.R.E. He is also active in scouting, having earned the Eagle Scout Award.
He earned a bachelor's degree, cum laude, in speech communications and political science from North Carolina State University in 1980. J.D. and his wife Mary have three children and reside in Scottsdale, Arizona.
