Swanson Middle School was built in 1939 to relieve overcrowding at nearby Washington-Lee High School (then serving grades 7-12). Swanson is the oldest junior high school in Virginia. In 1990, on Swanson's 50th anniversary, the Virginia State Legislature passed a resolution proclaiming Swanson as Virginia's first junior high school. Today, over 700 students are enrolled at Swanson Middle School.
