From the Site of Dunbar Sr. High School:
Dunbar Sr. High School is a comprehesive high school
with grades 9-12. It is named in honor of the famous poet Paul Laurence
Dunbar. Dunbar traces its roots back to the 1870s when the preparatory high
school was the first public high school for black students in the United
States.
The Dunbar staff is dedicated to providing a quality education to all of its
students in a highly competitive and technological society. In 1993, Dunbar
became the first comprehensive public high school in Washington, DC, to be
awarded the Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the US Department of
Education in its national secondary school recognition program.
