From the Site of Benjamin Banneker Academic High School:
Benjamin Banneker Academic High School is one of 15 public high schools serving the entire District of Columbia. The school offers a highly structured four-year program leading to college entrance. The school is named for Benjamin Banneker, a self-taught mathematician, outstanding astronomer, author of almanacs, surveyor, humanitarian and inventor.
At the end of school year 2001-2002, 103 students, representing 40% of the total enrollment, received a grade point average of 3.500 or better.
Banneker believes that every individual has certain basic human needs, beyond educational needs, which must be addressed by the schools.
