Anacostia Senior High School is located in the historic southeast Washington, DC neighborhood of the same name. It opened its doors in 1935-the first high school "east of the river" in Washington. At the time there were only 400 eighth and ninth grades students enrolled. In the early 1940s as the student body grew, Anacostia became a senior high school only. Anacostia Senior High School is known as the "School of Academies," because it was the first high school in the area to be completely subdivided into smaller learning communities designed to maximize student achievement and involvement.
