Writing about: Justice Sandra Day O'Connor

"We've never hired a woman as an attorney, and I don't see the day when we will," law firms told Sandra Day O'Connor. Yet despite such blatant adversity, she relentlessly pursued her goals and was appointed the first female on the Supreme Court. It is such strength and dedication that I hope to have in my own life as I pursue my own goals in leadership and public service. The "Students and Leaders" program gave me the opportunity to see my role model as a real human being and not as an infallible legend. I know it will give me hope, time and again, as I journey towards my own goal of serving my fellow citizens. I know that such a path towards public office will not be easy, but viewing Sandra Day O'Connor and the humor and ease with which she tells her stories, I know that each barrier overcome will make me a stronger, better, more dedicated person, open to the beliefs of others, yet true to my own values. Sandra Day O'Connor is such a person, leading the nation in breaking barriers in public service, even as she speaks to an all-male high school. I hope I will take these invaluable lessons in hard work, dedication, and genuine caring for others with me throughout my life.

In a world that had never heard of such things, Justice O'Connor believed that everyone could make a difference, no matter how humble a start, as long they had the drive and devotion to accomplish it. Her strength of resolve throughout her life has proved that statement true. In a world far from ideal, I have also come to realize that though some may have to work harder than others, if only that will is present, no effort is gone to waste. I know by jumping hurdles and achieving success, no matter the field, I will be setting an example, leading the next generation with into taking one more step towards equality. I have learned furthermore, that to be a leader, I must, like Sandra Day O'Connor, be a problem solver, but not the kind where I will force my will upon others. Justice O'Connor sat down with all parties when dealing with a case involving hospitals for the mentally ill - the doctors, the nurses, and even the patients - and in the end, she remained open-minded, saw what was unjust about the situation, and personally changed laws regarding the mentally ill in Arizona. And so I realize that I must be open to new ideas and different perspectives so that I may find solutions that are fair, just, and pleasing to everyone involved. Such open-mindedness is beneficial for every profession, but none more so than public service. Open-mindedness gives the opportunity to learn new things and to understand the values of others. And so I am ready to face the challenges that are waiting in my life as she so fearlessly faced hers.
