C-SPAN and COMCAST TEAM FOR STUDENTS & LEADERS IN WASHINGTON DC-AREA SCHOOLS, MON. APRIL 28-FRI. MAY 23
D.C. Area High School Students to Receive Lessons on Leadership and Public Service from Top Officials, Media Personalities -- 20 days, 40 School Visits

$25,000 in College Scholarship Money to be Awarded to Area H.S. Seniors

WASHINGTON, DC, APRIL 24, 2003 - C-SPAN, the public affairs network is teaming with Comcast to create a unique, month-long educational experience for District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia high school students through an initiative called Students & Leaders. The project will bring 40 national leaders to the classrooms of 40 local high schools in 20 days.

Beginning on Monday, April 28, 2003, leaders from the Congress, Administration, federal courts, and federal agencies and national print and TV journalists have been invited by C-SPAN to "return to the classroom" to discuss their lives and careers and the concepts of leadership and public service. C-SPAN cameras will record the events so these sessions can be shared with other students across the country and with the network's national viewing audience.

The two daily events will air between 7 and 9:30 p.m. the same day they occur on
C-SPAN3
, which is available on Comcast Digital Cable throughout the Washington Metro region on channel 105. The video will also be archived and available on the project's website, studentsandleaders.org, along with lesson plans and other teaching materials. C-SPAN Radio, at 90.1 FM in D.C., will also air the events.

The C-SPAN Education Foundation is also offering $25,000 in college scholarship money to D.C., Maryland and Virginia high school seniors as part of the project. More information on the scholarship competition is available through C-SPAN's Educators Hotline at 202-626-4858.

Joanne Wheeler, C-SPAN's Director of Community Relations, described the project as "an excellent opportunity for students in C-SPAN's hometown to interact with people like FBI Director Robert Mueller, Governor Mark Warner (D-VA), journalists Juan Williams and Tony Blankley and many others." Of the Comcast partnership, Wheeler added, "Each company has a good track record in education. Teaming for this project allows us both to play to our strengths to the benefit of local schools."

Jaye Gamble, Regional Senior Vice President for Comcast's Washington Metro/Virginia Region said that "Comcast understands the importance of providing students with unique educational opportunities. The Students & Leaders program gives young people the chance to meet some of our nation's leaders and learn more about the importance of public service and civic involvement." Gamble added, "Comcast is committed to enriching the communities we serve. Partnering with
C-SPAN on this innovative education initiative leverages the strengths and resources of both companies to provide an engaging learning experience for students in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Northern Virginia."
